Embroidery for Artists with Jenny Hart of Machine Project

Learn the basics of hand embroidery from Jenny Hart in a class that focuses on textural effects and free-form techniques. Hart will give a brief talk on her work, lead students through the basics of hand embroidery, review tools, share techniques for transferring original designs to fabric and “doodling” in embroidery. Students will leave with a new understanding of hand embroidery and the ability to experiment with it in their own work. This workshop is presented in collaboration with Machine Project (machineproject.com), a non-profit art and education space in Echo Park, and is also part of The Big Draw LA, a worldwide celebration of drawing in all its forms. 

 

Jenny Hart is best known for her artwork in hand embroidery and her design company Sublime Stitching. Hart’s work has been published in numerous books and magazines including Vogue, Nylon, Spin, The Face, Juxtapoz, The New York Times Magazine and others. Hart is also an award-winning author of seven titles on embroidery for Chronicle Books.She has exhibited in Los Angeles, Paris, London and New York. Jenny’s work is in multiple public and private collections of note, including the estate of Elizabeth Taylor and the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. For more information, visit jennyhart.net.

Location/Hours: 1450 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica CA 90401 in Palisades Park between Broadway & Santa Monica Blvd. Camera Obscura open Mon - Fri 9am – 3pm & Sat 11am – 4pm.

Registration – Online: create an account and view classes at smgov.net/reserve. Sort by location to view “1450 Ocean”. Bring cash to cover material fees on the first day of class. In Person: For cash or check, advance registration accepted 1450 Ocean between 9am-5pm M-F & 11am-4pm Saturday. Day-of: Call 310-458-2239 to confirm availability, preferably by the Tuesday before class starts; plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of class.

Refunds/Transfers: For all multisession classes, refunds/transfers will be issued only if requested within one business day after the first class meeting. A $15.00 processing fee applies for each activity session refunded. Any material fees are nonrefundable. All single-session classes are nonrefundable. Requests must be made in person, by mail or email to communityclasses@smgov.net.

Parking and Transport: Parking is $1 for first 2.5 hours in Parking Structure 7 (off Broadway west of 4th) or 8 (off 2nd St. north of Colorado) adjacent to the Santa Monica Place Mall. Every 30 min. thereafter is $1.50 to a maximum of $14. There are also meters on Ocean Avenue; $2/hr maximum 2 hours. After hours several local lots offer flat rates.
