Doodle, sketch, and draw with musical inspiration. MUSIC TO DRAW TO features our current artist-in-residence Lisa Diane Wedgeworth and the celestially-inspired band Desert Magic.

Based in Los Angeles, Lisa Diane Wedgeworth is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is rooted in storytelling. Informed by personal narratives, her work takes form as painting, video, installation, photography and archived oral histories. Wedgeworth earned her MFA from California State University, Los Angeles in 2014. She has shown in numerous galleries and museums, including the Charlie James Gallery (LA) and the Harvey B. Gannt Center (NC.) From 2015 - 2016, Wedgeworth exhibited emerging artists in her studio-based project space, PS 2920, in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. She is a recipient of a Metabolic Studio Archiving Project Fellowship and was the 2016 Georgia Fee Artist/Writer in Residence. This summer, she was a Hermitage Art Fellow in Englewood, Florida. For her tenure at the Camera Obscura (8/18-11/17/18) she is working on a suite of small-scale abstract paintings that acknowledge and celebrate the space she and other black women occupy amidst the rapidly changing demographics of her community. She'll also be leading workshops that focus on handmade expression and the exploration of digital tools, and a series of discussions specifically created for this residency called "Claiming Creativity." In total, these events seek to engage participants in an integration of thought, feeling, analysis, expression and sharing. Her website; her Camera events.

Desert Magic is an LA-based music collective that specializes in musical interpretations of the cosmos, nature, and the Tao Te Ching. In 2015, the band released their debut album, based on the solstices and equinoxes, on a-round-the-sun.com and last year, they released their solar system (per)sonification on danceoftheplanets.com. They are currently working on settings of the Tao Te Ching and a new app version of the Dance of the Planets. They have performed at venues such as The Bootleg Theater, The Satellite, The LA Arboretum, Radius Gallery, and at deep listening workshops at Yogala in Echo Park (third Friday of every month). The group's line-up for the COAST performance is Steven Kai van Betten, Logan Hone, Odeya Nini, and Alex Wand. desertmagic.org
