A Botanical Collage at the Huntington

October 1, 2011

Huntington visitors took part in a unique communal art project that celebrated the act of drawing. Using Alex Champion's original labyrinth artwork "Spinning Meandering Cross" as the departure point, visitors of all ages will have the opportunity to participate in a communal art project that celebrates the act of drawing.

Using the South Lawn and labyrinth as a living canvas, visitors will make their "mark" by placing leaves, twigs, flowers, and other materials on the grass to create a giant collage. Lines, patterns, and colors will emerge and change with each addition. Time-lapse photography will record the creation and disappearance of the artwork.

Santa Monica College Art Club hosts The Big Draw LA Event

The public is invited to join the members of the Santa Monica College Art Club in creating 4 large panels, 4' x 8', of collaborative drawing projects. College students will organize and participate with elementary school children and parents using a variety of drawing materials to create colorful, mixed media panels that will be installed at the college and local elementary schools.

TEENS! Come join us as we draw and trade drawings of horses. We will be drawing on index sized cards either a head of a horse or a tail of a horse. You can do as many as you want and be as creative as you like. Imagine a half of a horse as a bicycle or the head of a horse as a skyscraper. KCET Departures, in collaboration with Big Draw LA, and the NELAart Walk invites Angelenos to Map their Los Angeles.  The event is part of the launch celebration for Departures Highland Park, the newest installment of our ongoing digital documentary series on L.A.'s cultural histories and neighborhoods.  Participants are invited to draw a map of their L.A., their neighborhood, their community and submit it to the Departures Power of Place: Map Your L.A. contest. Mapping empowers residents to initiate a visual conversation about Los Angeles while discovering new corners of L.A., unfolding histories and creating shared visions of our city.

Discover the secret method of drawing used by engineers & architects. Participants will learn how to represent 3D objects as 6 views on a drawing just like engineers do through a series of fun games. Then students will get to build and tinker with their own rubber band car (to keep) using assembly drawings. 3D CAD modelling software will be available for tinkering. Come learn to draw with real engineers.
This class is best for kids ages 7-18. All kids must attend with a parent or guardian.

Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art - Casts and Still Life

The Los Angeles Academy of Figurati e Art (LAAFA) will be hosting a Big Draw Event in Los Angeles. There will be a morning session (10am to 1pm) and afternoon session (1:30pm to 4:30pm) of uninstructed classes for your enjoyment. Casts Drawing/Painting - Students will be able to either draw or paint from a cast. Sight-size is a method of drawing and painting an object exactly as it appears to the artist on a one to one scale. A sight-size drawing or painting can result in an accurate and realistic piece of artwork.
Still Life - Students may paint from nature or man-made objects provided by the school. Each set-up will be in a Fall Foliage Theme. Students will need to bring drawing/painting supplies. LAAFA will provide: Drawing Benches, Easels, Casts, and Still Life set-ups. Working stations are available on a first come basis.

Join Ryman Arts, the Museums at Exposition Park and USC on a Make Your Mark in the Park activity. You will help create a continuous drawing that winds its way around the Park, drawing the exciting activities and beautiful gardens before you. Bring your sketchbooks, hiking shoes, sunscreen, and a picnic lunch. We will hike and sketch as a group along the trails of Charmlee Park. A park docent will lead our hike, ending at the cliffs of Malibu, and an arts educator will conduct a lesson on how the early explorers had to draw everything they saw, because there were no cameras in the 15th century. Everything is free (except for a few dollars to park and a tax deductible donation to AEAC is welcome). All children must be accompanied by an adult. Reservations required. Space is limited.
